What is enrichment?
Pet enrichment refers to activities, toys, or environments designed to stimulate a pet’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being, promoting their overall health and happiness. Pet enrichment is essential both at home and in shelters or boarding environments. Studies show that daily enrichment activities can reduce stress, aid in infection prevention, and significantly improve a pet’s mental and physical health. These activities should be tailored to each species and individual needs, aiming to enhance overall well-being and foster healthier behaviors. In many cases, enrichment can also improve a pet’s chances of adoption.
What are the common types of enrichment?
There are five common types of pet enrichment. The ideal combination of these enrichment types will be determined based on a pet’s individual needs and what will most help support their overall well-being.
Cognitive enrichment involves creating an environment that offers ample opportunities for physical, social, and mental stimulation. It encourages exploration, learning, and problem-solving, which may help develop and maintain cognitive abilities and overall brain health. Nearly all enrichment activities engage a pet’s cognitive skills.
The pet’s environment is designed to encourage species-specific behaviors that address both its psychological and physical needs. This can include a comfortable resting or sleeping area, access to chew toys or novel items, opportunities to climb or perch, and a place to hide when desired.
Social enrichment involves providing opportunities for pets to engage in social behaviors through interactions with humans and other pets. While it can overlap with other types of enrichment, sometimes the most effective form is simply sitting with the pet for a few minutes each day.
Food enrichment involves offering the pet’s food in a new way or providing a different type of food to stimulate interest and engagement.
Focuses on stimulating the five senses of pets: visual (sight), olfactory (smell), auditory (hearing), tactile (touch), and gustatory (taste/food).

Playgroups in action
At our shelter, a dog’s well-being is our top priority. That’s why we have daily playgroups! In these supervised sessions, our dogs get to socialize, burn off energy, and have fun in a safe environment. This enrichment helps reduce stress and allows us to learn more about each dog’s unique personality, leading to happier dogs and more successful adoptions.
What are the benefits?
- For Our Dogs: Playgroups provide crucial mental and physical enrichment, reducing kennel stress and allowing dogs to express their natural behaviors in a healthy way.
- For Adopters: By observing different play styles and social cues, our trained staff gets to know each dog’s unique personality. This helps us match them with the perfect family and can even help us support fearful or undersocialized dogs on their journey to a loving home.

FAQ
Our dedicated team of enrichment specialists, guided by our experienced Animal Behaviorist, work tirelessly every day to ensure enrichment is provided to our shelter pets in various forms.
Yes, safety is our top priority. Our team is trained to manage the group dynamics and mitigate risks. We match dogs based on their size, temperament, and play style (from gentle and dainty to rough and rowdy) to create a fun and positive environment for everyone.
We tailor our approach to each dog’s individual needs. While many of our dogs thrive in a group setting, we understand that it’s not the right fit for everyone. Playgroups help us identify dogs who might prefer one-on-one time with people or a calmer canine companion.
Playgroups are one of the best ways for us to get to know a dog’s true personality! By observing them in a more natural, social setting, we gain valuable insights into their behavior and what they’ll be like in a home. This knowledge helps us make more successful adoption matches, ensuring you find the perfect companion for your family.
Rescue-only or sick pets receive daily food enrichment tailored to their needs. They are also evaluated by our veterinary team, who provide appropriate medical care and monitor their progress. Our Rescue Coordinators work closely with rescue organizations to help place these pets in settings that can best support their recovery and long-term well-being.
Adoptable cats also benefit from cattery playtime, daily sensory enrichment, and treat-dispensing toys.
Volunteer and donate! Volunteers can assist the enrichment team by providing extra out-of-kennel enrichment, such as walking dogs not scheduled for play yard time or those needing additional stimulation. Volunteers aren’t limited to handling dogs—helping clean and refill food enrichment tools and toys also makes a big difference, allowing the enrichment team to focus on taking more dogs or cats out.
The enrichment team would greatly appreciate durable slip leads with stoppers, martingale collars, treats, peanut butter, empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls, and feather toys for cats.
